Tamilnadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University is the first Veterinary university started exclusively for veterinary and animal sciences in the south Asia in 1989. It was founded in Chennai, Tamilnadu, India.

Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS) is the first veterinary university in India, established on 20th September 1989. With over three decades of pioneering service, TANUVAS continues to uphold excellence in veterinary, animal, and food sciences. It originated from the historical Madras Veterinary College, which was founded in 1903 and remains a cornerstone of veterinary education in India.

The university’s vision is to achieve global excellence in education and research while contributing to livestock and poultry productivity through innovative technologies. TANUVAS fulfills a threefold mandate: education, research, and extension, ensuring scientific advancement reaches farmers and rural communities.

Spanning a 700-acre campus at Madhavaram Milk Colony in Chennai, TANUVAS boasts state-of-the-art facilities

1. Madras Veterinary College (MVC), Chennai

  • Established in 1903, it is one of the oldest veterinary colleges in India.
  • Located in Vepery, Chennai, it features Indo-Saracenic architecture, smart classrooms, and advanced veterinary clinical and research facilities.

2. Veterinary College and Research Institute (VCRI), Namakkal

  • Known for its strong focus on poultry research and rural outreach.
  • Offers extensive livestock farm facilities and disease surveillance systems.

3. VCRI, Tirunelveli

  • Situated in Ramayanpatti, this campus serves the southern districts of Tamil Nadu.
  • It supports regional livestock farming through research and student engagement.

4. VCRI, Orathanadu (Thanjavur)

  • Plays a key role in veterinary services in the Cauvery Delta region.

5. VCRI, Salem

  • One of the newer campuses, helping improve veterinary access in north-western Tamil Nadu.
